Phoenix Gold Golf Bangkok
About
Strategic Robert Trent Jones Jr design in beautiful surroundings
The 36 holes of the Phoenix Gold Golf Bangkok, previously known as the Suvarnabhumi Golf & Country Club, offer an exceptional golfing experience set in a breathtaking landscape of flat paddy fields, open marshland with tall reeds and grasses, and a plethora of migratory birds and fish. Each hole on the golf course is distinct in approach and design, offering a unique challenge for golfers of all skill levels.
The North/East course, which comprises the first 18 holes, is just a tad shorter than the West/South course, but it compensates for this with more technical challenges. The back-nine of the North/East course is particularly noteworthy, featuring a remarkable array of dog-legging holes that make excellent use of the surrounding marshland. There is also a more parkland feel to this course with plenty of water hazards to be navigated, and most holes have greenside bunkering, adding to the challenge.
Despite the abundance of bunkers, the greens are not always broad, making accurate approach play critical. Smallish trees and soft earth mounding separate and define each hole, and the ample water supply on the course creates many hazards to overcome. The final hole on the North/East course is a good-length par-4 that shares a small lake and the last green with the 18th on the West/South course.
Following the design of Robert Trent Jones Jr, the West and South courses have outward holes arranged adjacent to the inward holes. At first glance, the fairways may appear broad, but precision driving to the correct position is crucial to attack the flag and score well. A band of semi-rough separates the parallel holes, and often forces a lay-up shot, while the deep greenside bunkers provide excellent protection to greens that run fast and true, with subtle borrows.
The terrain on the West course is more undulating than on the South course, making it the best of the President's four out-and-back loops. The marshland is frequently in play, and small lakes must be avoided from time to time. The par-5 18th hole is an excellent way to end the round, playing back towards the clubhouse.
Phoenix Gold Golf Bangkok's spacious Mediterranean-style clubhouse could do with an upgrade, but it is more than adequate for most golfers' needs. The Hole-In-One coffee shop serves a variety of Thai and International dishes, and other facilities are also available. The golf course's natural surroundings and layout make it a popular destination for golfers heading to Bangkok.

A very good experience on this golf course. Only lacking was the wind which would have made it more interesting.
